5.9 SOLVENTS

Do not use motor spirits for cleaning.

Always obtain advice from your Job Supervisor when doubtful of the properties of a solvent.

Wear chemicals resistant gloves when using solvents.

Watch for the following hazards when using solvents; fore, toxicity, chemical reaction and effect on plastic and insulation materials.

At the first sign of skin irritation see your first aid attendant.

5.10 EXPLOSIVE GAS HAZARDS

No work involving a source of ignition shall be attempted near any pit, manhole, open sewer, drain vent, pipe trench, or any enclosed space where there is a reason to believe that flammable vapours may be present until a test has been made with an atmosphere that is safe for hot work.

At locations similar to the ones above where there is reason to believe that toxic gas may be present, a similar test with an approved toxic gas detector shall be made and no work shall be preformed in the location until said test indicates toxic gas concentrations lower than the maximum permissible for that gas or until approved protective measures have been taken.
