5.6.2 CRANE OPERATION
Only
licensed crane drivers are authorised to operate/drive any crane
Dogman/crane chasers are not permitted to work with a crane unless
they hold the appropriate certificate.
Licence/accreditation
must be recognised or issued by the State/Territory in which you
wish to operate, or a nationally recognised certificate held.
Should
the crane specification in any way exceed licence/accreditation
limits no attempt shall be made to operate the crane.
A safety
check shall be completed on each operational part of the equipment
including switches, gauges, levers and controls before use.
If
any part is defective you must report direct to your Site
Supervisor and withdraw your services until the crane is serviced
and approved.
Understand
and sight the safe working load chart of the crane and written evidence
of the unit weigh of each item to be lifted to ensure you are operating
within the capacity of the crane. Where such evidence cannot be
provided and the site supervisor verbally instructs work to commence
you must first refer to your Branch office for instructions.
Understand
the SWL (Safe Working Load) of slings, chains, shackles etc. If
you are in doubt, do not undertake any lift until a licensed Rigger
or Engineer has checked it.
No
part of any crane shall operate within 3 meters of any power line.
If you are called upon to do so, notify your Job Supervisor.
Outriggers
shall be used at all times, (except) when travelling). If the crane
is travelling with a load, every reasonable effort shall be made
to keep the outriggers extended as far as practicable.
Hand signals to crane and hoist operators shall be those prescribed
by the applicable Legislation and regulations for the type of crane
in use.
Competent
personnel under the supervision of a qualified supervisor shall
make rigging and boom changes.
Only
approved lifting tackle with S.W.L. stamped thereon to be used.
If unapproved tackle is to be used notify your Job Supervisor or
safety officer.
Permission to lift people in any device such as a bucket, cradle
or platform can only be given by an inspector of Construction Safety
in writing.
Riding
on loads, hooks or blocks are strictly forbidden.
