5.4.1 EXCAVATION AND TRENCHES

Trenches, 1.5 meters or more in depth, shall be shored or sloped in an appropriate manner.

There shall be ladders in each end of any trench one metre deep or more where employees are working to provide safe exits from the trench. Every ladder or run of ladders arising a vertical distance between any two successive landing places shall not exceed six metres.

Excavated material or other material must be stored nearer than 1/3 the depth or one metre from the edge of any excavation, whichever is the greater.

Excavations and trenches shall be inspected daily by a competent person. If there is evidence of slides or cave-ins, all work in the exposed area shall cease until necessary precautions have been taken for the protection of employees.

5.4.2 FLOOR OPENINGS, HOLES AND EDGES

Floor openings or holes shall be protected by approved guard rails or covers. If covers are used, they shall be adequately designed and approved to support the loads to be imposed upon them and shall be secured to prevent accidental displacement.

All hole covers shall be adequately marked "DO NOT REMOVE _ HOLE UNDERNEATH".

The open edges of all floors approx. two (2) metres or more above the next floor level shall be guarded by an approved barricade secured to prevent accidental displacement.
