5.4 CONFINED SPACES

Do not enter any confined spaces until all procedures have been read and understood, all essential checks for gasses have been carried out and that all equipment and assistance is provided. Always follow confined space procedures, carefully.

Consult your immediate supervisor for details on:

Work Permits
Testing the atmosphere
Ventilating procedures
Personal Protective Equipment including Harnesses & Safety Line
Standby Person (Bubby) and rescue plan.

Before entering ALWAYS:

Check the space has been properly ventilated
Stay out of the confined space if tests show that the atmosphere is unsafe - unless proper arrangements have been made for your safety.
Ensure that you have adequate means for leaving the space if the atmosphere should deteriorate while you are in the confined space.
Make sure the area has been checked for oxygen deficiency, explosive or toxic conditions.
Check the permit to work procedures prior to entry and sign it off.

When working in confined spaces ALWAYS:

Make frequent checks on the quality of the air
Take external factors such as the weather into account
Ensure that direct communication is maintained between all people involved in the work
Be sure all-temporary electrical equipment being used - including lighting - is of the approved safety standard.
hink of your work mates safety when using hammers, picks, shovels, axes, brush hooks, and similar tools in any confined or close spaces. This also includes solvent cements, flammable materials and any hazardous substance.

NOTE: In the absence of formalised procedures contact your Field Officer before commencing any confined spaces work.
