Electrical arc welders are safe machines to operate when used properly and intelligently but like many machines, they can be used in a wide range of conditions. It is important for operators to understand their limitations.

5.3.1 SAFETY POINTS FOR WELDING

Do not overload fuses on welding circuits.
Use protective clothing and safety equipment - goggles, shields. Lenses, gloves, leather jacket or apron - designed for the purpose, at all times.
Always check that all equipment, flexible cords and plugs are well maintained.
Regular maintenance checks by a qualified electrician are essential.

Welding cable shall be connected or spliced in an approved manner.
There shall be no exposed metal parts in any splice.

Acetylene and Oxygen cylinders must be used in an upright position.
They should be strapped securely.

All Oxygen, Acetylene and stored pressure gas cylinders should be secured in an upright position.

Do not allow oil or grease to come in contact with oxy-acetylene fittings.
When not in use, turn cylinders off and ensure there are no leaks.

When transporting gas cylinders (which are not fixed in trolley) remove regulators.
Always observe transport requirements.
