5.2.3. FIXED MACHINES
Do
not operate any fixed machines; e.g. lathes, overhead drills, grinding
wheels, saws, steel sharpeners or the like, until you have been
taught how to use it and are authorised to do so.
Wear
complete eye protection as advised by your Job Supervisor.
Safety
spectacles are insufficient on some of these machines.
Either goggles or full face shields are required. When using a high-speed
grinder both goggles and a face shield are required.
Ensure

held into work position. Keep your mind and eyes on the job.
Do
not have loose or flapping clothes - they can easily get caught

and do not allow items to be placed on floor near machine. Do not
attempt to clean any machine whilst it is in operation unless a
specified procedure applies.
Do
not allow lengths of metal swarf etc to coil from job-stop machine

not use your hands. Where necessary gloves should be worn.
Follow
strictly the workshop safety procedures for each machine.
No machine is to have guards removed or be operated without its
guard in place, for any reason.
5.3.4 LADDERS
Only approved ladders shall be used. Job made ladders shall be substantially
constructed in accordance with an approved design.
Portable
straight or extension ladders shall be place at a safe angle and
shall be secured to prevent displacement; the top of each ladder
giving access to a work area or platform shall extend at least one
metre above the highest rung at that level and be tied off. If the
ladder cannot be secured, someone should be "footing"
the ladder whilst it is being used.
There
may be situations where certain types of ladders are unsafe; e.g.
aluminium ladders in an electrical environment. Check with your
immediate supervisor or Field Officer if in doubt.
