3.6 SKIN CARE AND SUN PROTECTION

Medical evidence clearly shows that people working outside are in high-risk group in relation to Ultra Violet Radiation induced permanent skin damage and the development of skin cancer. Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer causes in the world.

The following clothing standards are recommended by the Cancer Foundation and should be applied where possible. These are:

Wear long sleeved shirts with a collar. Be aware that some material allows more ultra violet radiation through and may not offer as much protection as you think;

Wear long trousers to protect the legs. There have been many instances where skin cancers and skin damage has occurred on the leg.

Wear a broad brimmed hat. This not only protects the face but gives protection to the eyes. The use of a cap is not sufficient, as it does not protect the neck or ears.

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 15+. The higher the SPF number the more protection it affords. Remember you will need to apply sunscreen regularly throughout the day.

• Where practicable, work in the shade or regulate your sun exposure work to periods outside the High Ultra Violet exposure times of 10am - 2pm (11am- 3pm daylight saving time). Use natural or artificial shade if available.
